The Flipped Classroom

Here is a u-tube video that got me interested in the flipped classroom model. Aaron Sam is the teacher who experimented with a flipped classroom and in this video he gives a closer perspective to his viewpoint.  What do you think?  What benefits or cons do you see in a flipped approach?
For those of you unfamiliar with the flipped approach below is a great visual to understand.

  1. I think this approach would definitely maximize the learning and practicing time in the classroom. However, how is it ensured that all students have access to lecture from home? Then, once we know they have access, how do can we ensure they actually actively view the lecture? It is great to see a successful video on the flipped classroom, I just have a fear of students not doing their part.

  2. To be honest, I never heard of the flipped classroom. After watching the video and looking at the image, the idea seems really cool. It will definitely help students and maximize the time in the class. I can see students watching a lecture on a grammar skill at home and having more practice time in class-especially with the more difficult concepts.

Felicia has a point: my only concern is the students not doing their part.

  3. I agree. I am worried about that as well. Recently I created a Google Doc where students viewed a video and took notes. The notes I checked and they were given a homework grade. I saw that many of the students, even those who struggle with homework completion, seemed engaged to take notes and everyone in the class had the assignment done. The other concern which you brought up was if every student has access to internet at home. What I have offered currently is allowing students library time during a study hall to go online. I have not entirely committed to a flipped classroom but with students who do not have access at home, I am hoping to be able to burn videos onto a DVD so students can watch the videos on their TV at home.
